School Badge and Motto

The scarlet and sky blue of the school badge were the colours chosen by Miss Green to be the official school colours. They are derived from her brother’s academic gown and hood when he received his degree of Doctor of Laws at the University of Sydney.

The shield of the badge is surmounted by the Bishop’s mitre symbolising the authority of the Church and the pervading power of the Holy Spirit.

On the shield itself, three figures are depicted: The seated lady is Charity or Mother Love, the dove is Hope with the olive branch representing Peace. The open Bible on the Cross represents Faith.

All three together are drawn from the final verse of the school reading – “So faith, hope and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love”. (1 Corinthians 13.1-13)

Beneath the shield is the school motto “Quodcumque facitis ex animo operamini.” It comes from Colossians 3.23, where the translation reads: “Whatsoever you do, do it heartily”.

This motto is over a hundred years old but is still a fundamental foundation of the school. It aims to impress upon the girls that they can do anything and once they have decided what they would like to do they are encouraged to try, succeed and reach their full potential. It also teaches students to live a full life with courage and vigour.

The School’s founder, Miss Florence Emily Green, wanted to teach girls service, integrity, pride, both in themselves and the school – faith in God and faith in themselves.

Respect and compassion for others and the courage to act on their beliefs are developed within a Christian ethos.

NEGS aims to develop accomplished, educated individuals with active, passionate and creative minds.
