On Sunday 13th – Monday 14th August I was fortunate to attend the National Boarding Conference hosted by ABSA. Over 150 schools were represented and the Directors of Boarding were challenged, entertained and educated by Dr Chris Thurber, Clinical Psychologist from Phillips Exeter Academy, New Hampshire in the U.S. He has expertise in teacher-student boundaries, leadership, positive psychology and student mental health. One of the workshops was on Positive Psychology which explores the idea of an individual’s character strengths just as we do at NEGS in our Wellbeing Program in the day school.

POSITIVE PSYCHOLOGY IN THE BOARDING ENVIRONMENT

Boarding Newsletter Report Week 8, Term 3

Weekend activities are a great way for the girls to interact with other year groups and definitely feel more positive about themselves and life in Boarding @NEGS. Over the last couple of weeks the boarders have had the opportunity to be involved in Cupcake baking where approximately 20 boarders, the Gap students, some visitors from Japan, Ms Steddy and myself baked and iced over 120 cupcakes to assist with the RSPCA fundraiser which was held in Week 6. Well Done on your efforts boarders – this was also achieved with our extra four new ovens provided by the P&F Wishlist funds in the CAPAD Department.

Year 11’s were invited to run an Obstacle Course competition on another Sunday which was a big success. Madeline Lyon, Sophie Wells, Sarah Higgins and Charlotte Kingham created a great course for teams to get through and they did in such record time that the girls then decided to hold a dance off competition in the MPC. Thank you Year 11 and thank you to the girls who got involved and had some fun.

We are all looking forward to Grandparent’s Day, Spring Fair and the Old Girls’ Weekend this coming weekend. Families and students are encouraged to be part of as many events as possible over the weekend where there will be lots of food, fun, catching up with friends and I am sure as tradition would have it – some fantastic weather!!!!

Gold Coast Trip – Save the Date!
The Annual Gold Coast Trip for boarders and day students will be held Friday 24th November (approximately 1pm) – Sunday 26th November. We will be travelling by bus and staying at the lovely Treasure Island accommodation at Biggera Waters, QLD. Visiting Wet n Wild and having fun are just some of the exciting items on the itinerary. More information to come.
