Careers News – Week 4

Careers News

The life of a Careers Advisor is very busy at this time of the year. There are many activities on offer which involve the girls and are aimed at assisting them with their career goals.

Last week Mr Tom Paige and I accompanied Years 11 & 12 to the UNE Open Day. The verbal feedback from many girls was that this was very worthwhile. I have sent the girls a survey to complete for feedback on the various sessions to inform future planning of this event.

Year 10 are learning about careers in PBL this term with Mr Paige, Mrs Watson, Miss Turner and Mrs Doyle. So far they have completed some quizzes in the myfutures website that the school subscribes too. Please talk about this with your daughter. They will have discovered some very interesting career options with job prospects and salary levels. For the rest of the term we will be having some guest speakers as well as starting a resume, applying for Tax File Numbers and how to fill in a TFN declaration. If you are a parent that would be willing to talk to the girls about your career or occupation please let me know as I am putting together a database of guest speakers.

Year 12 are starting to apply for UNE early entry. To clear up any confusion this is the process of Early Entry.

The girls apply from now, however, we will not be assessing these at the school until mid to late Term 3 on UNE’s recommendation. Therefore if the girls have submitted their form and want to change preferences, they need to contact me to have their forms returned to them.

UNE do not start assessing early entry until after the last HSC Exam and then start notifying successful applicants mid to late November. Please note that the school will assess each student’s work ethic and their ability to be successful at University; for example their ability to work independently.

If you have any questions about early entry or anything careers related, please do not hesitate to contact me on careers.advisor@negs.nsw.edu.au.

JobJump is a new careers website that we have been offered to trial for the remainder of Term 2. At first glance and investigation there seems to be some advantages of using this site including;

  • The site if we subscribe will be available for students and parents to the end of the year following Year 12 or what they refer to as Year 13.
  • The courses list subjects that should be chosen for Yr 11 and 12.
  • Job site with real jobs
  • Resume builders

All students from Year 7 to Year 12 are eligible to sign up for the free trial along with their parents and caregivers. Follow this link https://jobjump.com.au/. You can watch the videos that appear at the bottom of the page for more information or click the I’m New button on the top right. In the box that says school, start typing NEGS and NEGSArmidale will appear. Select the school and then the password is negs This is all lowercase as written)

Click continue and then complete your details using a personal email if you have one rather than your school email and your own password. Bookmark the site.

Please feel free to have a  look around and try some CWIZ (Careers Wizards). I welcome feedback as to whether students and parents find this a useful resource.

Please remember to check the NEGS Careers Portal for all up to date careers information.
